AQ Leader Calls For an Islamic State in Somalia
an infulential religioius leader and AQ collaborator has vowed to crate an Islamic state in the lawless region of Somalia in the Horn of Africa.
Sheik Hassan Dahir Aweys stated that following, "The Western World should respect our ideas in choosing the way we want to govern our country, the way we want to go about our business. That is our right."
Aweys is a main figure in a religious party that is competing against two secular parties for control of Somalia. He was linked to AQ by US intel shortly following 9/11.
Last week Aweys was accused by the United Nations as arming hundreds to keep a westernized transitional government from taking power in Somalia.
The ICG (International Crisis Group) of Belguim says the threat of terror inspired by Islamists in and from Somalia is extremely real.
Aweys' response to this was something to the effect that he and his followers, many of whom are armed, refuse to rest until an Islamic government is established in their country.
