Hamas Victory Supposedly Stuns Entire World
Conceding defeat, Abu Mazen (otherwise known as President Mahmood Abas) has resigned, but has also given statements to the effect that he may go around this newly appointed government and continue to talk peace with the Israelis.
Supposedly the world is not surprised by this "victory," but this must not be a surprise to many Israelis who have been expecting something like this since the time that there was talk of "doing away" with Arafat as leader of the Palestinian people. The most logical explanation as to why they did not was simply because "what would replace him (in the form of Hamas) would be far worse".
Whatever the case the world will now have no choice but to finally make up its mind about Hamas. They are not going to change or back down in their beliefs. What you see is what you get. They are not going to pretend and smile in your face like ARafat and say something entirely different to their own people in Arabic. So the ones who empathise with them are now going to have to answer to what Hamas does as a political entity and not a voice of a so called victim. There will be no more excuses for anything they say or do. They will be held under the same microscope as they expect Sharon or Bush or Blair to be held under and will have to answer to the same forces that be.
People will have to be honest when they now say "one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter" now. This is no longer civilians. Governments are held accountable for their actions, and that includes ALL governements, not just selective ones.
