Three Explosions Rock a London Oil Refinery
At 6am London time, two there were two blasts at the Buncefield Oil Depot followed quickly by a third. The Bunsfiled Oil Depot is located right next to the Lutton Airport in the suburb of Hemel Hempsted. This is 40 km/25 miles North of London proper.
Atleast twenty containers are currently in flames.
Many in the area heard a loud roar follow by the explosion (from the first two blasts). Some eyewitnesses swear they saw a plane fly into the refinery. Flames were as high as 100 meters.
Hetfordshire police quickly shot down the claims of a plane having flown into the refinery, quick to call this an accident. This may simply be a way to keep people calm until a proper investigation has been done. Or it may be so since a small airport is nearby.
Casualties are being reported at the moment, but the numbers have yet to be calculated as this just happened and there is the constant noise of ambulances going in and out. There were many workers present at Bunsfield at the time as well as security guards. Atleast one of the casualties is one of the security guards.
Residents in the area are reporting a terrible odor in the air. The smoke is so thick that they can literally "taste" the oil in their throats. Many were forced to evaccuate because of this and the fact that many homes have been damaged. Cars are being redirected out of the area.
Effects from the blasts were felt as far away as Oxfordshire.
