Is Belgium Becoming a Hotbed For Recruiting Suicide Bombers?

Muriel De Guage was the first Belgian convert (to Islam) to blow herself up, but neither she nor her husband were the first to die in Iraq or elsewhere for their "cause".

Terrorism experts believe that in the last month or so alone atleast 5 "volunteers" left the small country of Belgium for Iraq to become "martyrs". Before Iraq, it was Afghanistan.

On September 9, 2001, the Afghan Opposition Leader, Ahmed Shah Massood was killed by 2 Belgian suicide bombers who were posing as TV reporters (their names were Abdessatar Dahmane and Rachid El Ouar). As many recall, this was the Northern Alliance leader opposed to the Taliban. This took place less than 48 hours before the Twin Towers fell.

The Dutch publication De Standaard is reporting that a Belgian Terror suspect named Mourad Chabarou, age 25, was preparing a suicide attack for himself in either Iraq, Spain, or Italy.

Chabarou is one of 13 members of the Moroccan Islamic Combatant Group or GICM now on trial in Belgium. Last May investigators searched through Charbarou's apartment on Van Schoor Street in Schaarbeek and found the fingerprint belonging to one of the alleged Madrid bombers named Mohammed Afalah.

Spanish police managed to find Afalaha's fingerprint in a small house where the bombs were made in the town of Moraqta de Tajuna, Spain as well as in a car parked at the Atocha station.

Afalah managed to escape even after a shootout with Spanish police. He fled to Belguim where he his out in a small room on Van Schoor Street, turning out to be Chabarou's apartment. Many of the 13 members of the GICM now on trial often visited that same address at the time.

No one is 100 percent certain where Afalah is now, but intelligence from Muslim extremist circles indicate that he left Belguim for Iraq where he blew himself up.

Something else that Chabarou will have to answer for at the time of his trial will be some phone conversations he had with one of the alleged masterminds of the Madrid bombings, Osman el-Sayed (AKA Mohammed the Egyptian). They spoke right after the Madrid bombings. Chabarou revealed to el-Sayed details of his plan to perform his jihad

Spanish judicials also reviewed the conversations. While Belgian officials feel Chabarou was planning his demise in Iraq, Spanish official fear his plans were to take place in either Spain or Italy.

Who Was Muriel Degauge?

Muriel Degauge was the daughter of working class Belgian parents. She was from Charleroi. She dabbled in drugs and alcohol in high school. She was a pretty girl-next-door. She was married twice.

Her first marriage was to an Algerian, which is when she actually converted to Islam but did not become radicalized.

Five years ago, she married a Syrian named Aissan. This is when she cut off contact with he world she previously knew. She began to completely cover her skin, wearing black gloves and a burkha.

Muriel had very little contact with her family in the past few years and she and Aissan moved to Brussels.

A few months ago Aissan and Muriel too their own car and drove with several others to Iraq via Turkey and Syria.

Just three weeks ago, Muriel contacted her parents one last time when she was in Syria. As soon as she made that call, she hung up and went to Iraq to blow herself up. A week or so prior to her suicide, her husband was shot in the head in Iraq by a US serviceman before he could detonate himself.

Another Belgian Couple Planned To Detonate In Iraq

A married Belgian couple of Moroccan origin were picked up by Antwerp authorities last Tuesday night in an anti-terror sweep run by the Belgian Federal Public Prosecutor's Office.

The couple were on the verge of leaving for Iraq. Their plan was to die as suicide bombers once they got there. They wanted to walk in the path of Muriel Degauge and her husband, Aissan.

This police operation took place all over Belgium against a network that is/was smuggling potential suicide bombers to Iraq and possibly elsewhere. This operation netted 14 people in one night.

The capture of this particular couple came about when their phone was tapped and they revealed their place over the phone to loved ones.

Those Who Helped M. DeGauge Get To Iraq: Belgian Kamikaze Network Names and Nationalities Revealed

A Belgian court decided that those who shepherded and possibly recruited 38 year old Muriel De Gaugue and her husband to Iraq shall be remanded in custody for atleast one month.

The alleged leader of the group is Billal S., a Belgian of Tunisian decent. He is the son of a radical Koran teacher who was expelled from Belgium in the 1990's.

Other members of the group include Billal's brother Souhaib, age 29; Pascal C., age 33, a Belgian convert to Islam; and Nabil K., age 30, a Belgian of Moroccan decent.

Another member of the group is Younes L. who is age 27. He is Belgian of Algerian decent. According to intelligence reports, Younes lost his leg as a mujahadeen recently in Iraq.

All the suspects are denying that they have been to Iraq in recent years although intelligence proves otherwise.

On a rainy day in March 2004 the Dutch traffic police puled a Belgian driver over for a broken headlight. What they stumbled upon left them dumbstruck.

The driver was Belgian born Khalid Bouloudo. He worked at a Ford Auto plant in Belguim. When police did a routine check at the scene, his name came up on Interpol watch list.

His name came up for his connection to the Morocan based terror organization GICM (Morocan Islamic Combatant Group), Morocan authorities want him for his connection to the 2003 Casablancaa bombings.

This random arrest set forth a domino effect of events highlighting the radicalization of Muslim youth and supprters throughout Europe for which other Europeans and authorities were largely unprepaared. This has caused even small countries such as Belguim to reevaluate their strategies and pass tougher laws.
