Indian Engineer Held Hostage By Taliban Killed

An Indian national working in Afghanistan as an engineer for an Indian company was abducted along with 3 Afghanis from the Southern Province of Nimroz. The kidnapping took place last Saturday in the Poshat Hasan District.

The Taliban gave an ultimatum to the Indian company that the engineer worked for to pull up stakes and move out of Afghanistan within a specific time frame. When the company did not, the kidnappers killed their hostage.

According to the Indian Foreign Ministry, an Indian driver went missing. They now confirm the engineer was that man. From Delhi, FM spokesman Navtej Sarna confirmed the Afghan authorities were investigating the matter.

The local police chief in Nimroz stated that the abductees were traveling on a very unsafe and dangerous road when kidnapped, perhaps they were doing so by accident, as they may have gotten lost.

The Taliban have abducted several engineers in Southern Afghanistan of Indian decent lately. They have kidnapped many engineers of Turkish decent as well.

Thousands protested in the Eastern Afghanistan province of Khost following the murder of well known and well loved pro-government cleric Mohamad Khan. His mosque was bombed as he was about to begin Ramadan prayers killing him and 18 other prayer worshippers. The Taliban are to blame.

The protesters were shouting "die terrorists".

This was the biggest demonstration since US led forces ousted the Taliban from power back in 2001.

Khost's governmenbt district chief Mohamed Akbar Zadran estimates the number of protesters at 4000 and says the people are demanding extra protection for their clerics.

Pro Governement Afghani Cleric Killed Before Friday Prayers

The BBC is reporting that a leading Afghani Muslim cleric was killed when a bomb detonated remotely in a mosque in the Southeast Afgani town called the Tani District. Sixteen others in attendance were injured as well. The Tani District is 18 miles or 25 km from Khost.

Mullah Maulvi Ahmed Khan was known for his pro govenrment stance. He was a member of a powerful progovernemnet clerics council called the Ulema.

Police Chief Mohamed Ayub believes the Taliban detonated the bomb that went off right before Mullah Khan began his Friday prayer Ramadan service.

Police Chief Ayub said the search is underway for suspects and that the Taliban have been behind the murders of four other por government clerics this summer, two in Kandahar, 1 in Helmand, and 1 in Petika.

Supsected Kidnapper of Italian Aid Worker Arrested in Kabul

The suspected kidnapper of an Italian aid worker was arrested in Kabul more than three months after the hostage was released, police said.

"Timur Shah, the kidnapper of aid worker Clementina Cantoni, was arrested at around 23H30 (17H00 GMT) tonight in 11th district of Kabul," police spokesman General Mahboob Amiri told AFP.

"He was captured with two of his friends after a tip-off," Amiri said.

"They were handed over to intelligence department for interrogation. We don't know yet if the two other men were involved in the kidnapping of the Italian worker," he said.
